Our Process
Writing a non-fiction book is inherently a
bit messy--richly so in that the author (subject
expert) and writer explore ideas together. So
the process outlined below explains a structure
we generally use, but we always anticipate that
we will take some productive detours together.
Book Proposal
The first "product" in the book-writing process
is a book proposal, which includes a chapter
outline, author bio, discussion of target
audiences/markets, list of competitive books,
and an analysis of what makes the proposed book
valuable and unique. If the book is targeted for
a specific agent and/or publisher, we write the
proposal to meet their particular specifications
and requirements. One or more sample chapters
are provided to agents and publishers along with
the proposal. These reflect both the tone and
content of the book and are written to The
Chicago Manual of Style publication standards.
Writing the Manuscript
Once the proposal is accepted, we undertake the
writing process, chapter by chapter. We can work
with you in a variety of ways. Typically, we
conduct extensive interviews with you and, as
required, other sources. We also read materials
you have written for various purposes and review
video and audio copies of your presentations and
media interviews. Our goal is always to be sure
that we understand them fully and accurately.
We ask you to review each chapter as it is
completed and to provide very specific and
detailed feedback. Based on this, we make
changes. Often, the writing process yields
questions that lead to new ideas and
information. So at any point, we may find that
changes to the outline are needed.
When about half the chapters are completed, we
review the manuscript with you, with the goal of
thoughtfully reflecting on whether it is
accomplishing the right goals. We recommend
having several representative readers read a
draft of at least half of the manuscript, to get
their overall impressions and also specific
feedback on what is clear to them and what is
not. We use this information to make changes
that help to ensure the success of the book.
When the last chapter is completed, we review
the entire manuscript with you again, and make
final changes and corrections before
proofreading and submission to the publisher.
Working with Your Publisher
We stay with you through the publisher's
suggested edits and final page proofs, to ensure
that the book that is published is one that
accurately reflects your ideas, information, and
style, and achieves your goals.
